In a nutshell, Jennie Turrell loves to learn about, think about, and make art. For her, creating something out of nothing comes pretty close to magic.

Jennie Turrell is an elementary art teacher by day and picture book maker by night, school breaks, and when school-is-out-for-one-inch-of-snow.

Crayons are her favorite.

Jennie Turrell, author/illustrator

based in Sewanee, Tennessee

Jennie holds a bachelor’s degree in art from the University of the South, studied graphic design at the University of Georgia, and earned a master’s in elementary education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She has taught visual art in the Tennessee public schools for more than 15 years.

Her digital collages originate from traditional media and techniques including encaustic, watercolor, graphite and ink. She also integrates her photographs from the natural world around her home on the Cumberland Plateau.

When not making books, Jennie can be found drinking coffee on her back porch thinking about making books.  She is determined to bake the perfect focaccia and soaks up the love and laughter that comes from spending time with her husband and son around the dinner table.
